The US Department of Defense has evaluated Travelan®’s ability to bind and react to a variety of infectious Vibrio cholera strains from Southeast Asia. Vibrio cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It’s spread by the ingestion of contaminated food or water.

The bacteria evaluated in this recent study were obtained from infected US Department of Defense personnel deployed in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Thailand. The results of the research study reported that Travelan® is able to bind and is reactive to all 71 strains of Vibrio cholera tested.

What does this mean for the average traveler? That Travelan may reduce the risk of Travelers’ Diarhea for an even broader range of bacteria than just Enterotoxigenic E. coli. In fact these results, along with past US DoD studies suggest that Travelan may be an effective immunoprophylactic for Campylobacter spp, Shigella spp and Vibrio cholera.
